Description

This antler comb was found at the Dutch Hollow archaeological site, a large western Onöndowa'ga:' community, estimated to have been active between 1605-1620 CE. Three individual humans are represented as sets of inverted triangles on this comb, with three additional sets of triangles formed by the negative space between them. The edges of this comb are fragmented, and may have contained an extended motif with more individuals. Tableaus of this sort are found in a range of artistic contexts: they sometimes represent the unity of people, communities, or nations (as seen on Wampum belts), or in other contexts may indicate individuals lost or taken captive (as seen on tree paintings).
