Description

This antler comb was found at the Fugle archaeological site, a small western Onöndowa'ga:' community near the larger community at Dutch Hollow, estimated to have been active between 1605-1620 CE. This comb features seven stylized human figures represented by inverted triangles as the body and rounded diamond shapes for the heads. Additionally, the six sets of triangles in the negative space between then could also represent human figures. Tableaus of this sort are found in a range of contexts: they sometimes represent the unity of people, communities, or nations (as seen on Wampum belts), or in other contexts may indicate individuals lost or taken captive (as seen on tree paintings).
